After moving my family back home in 2006 to care for my ailing father, I went out and got my Real Estate License. It seemed like good way to give me the freedom I needed and a good way to make a living. All it seemed to provide me was a lot of stress and many sleepless nights. To put it plain and simple, I did not do great as a Real Estate agent. In fact, I was horrible at it. It did however; teach me the principles of Marketing and Branding, two big key components in helping build my now existing business.
My wife was convinced I needed to do something different, so in 2008, we started Dunkaroo Concessions. We would work sunrise to sundown and if we were lucky, I would end the day $100 richer. If I looked at my hourly wage, I should have given up. But after 2 years of hard work, we were starting to make some headway, by getting into our local event center. It seemed the hard work was starting to pay off. Still after all this, I was working three jobs 90 hours a week and just getting by. Something needed to change.
In 2010 I knew we needed to add Shaved Ice to our menu if we wanted to survive. We researched all sorts of Shaved Ice machines and took the leap and got our first Snowie. We went with Snowie because of the quality, speed, and fluff of the ice. Our first big event was the largest 3 on 3 basketball tournament in the world. While other shaved ice vendors had a line you would have to wait 30 minutes in, we were flying through our shaved ice with an average 2 minute wait time and the line never stopped for 8 hours. I instantly knew we made the right choice since I could make 15 cones in the time my competitors were making 1-2 cones.
We now have 3 Snowie 3000 machines and 1 Snowie 1000, including a custom Snowie Truck. We stay busy doing events over 100 days of the year, School Fundraisers, Birthday Parties, and corporate events. My personal favorite is doing school fundraisers, because you see so many smiling kids and it is way to give back to our community. Our personal record is serving 600 Shaved Ice in one hour at a school event, with two machines going.
Some of our busiest times are in the winter at our local Tri-City American Hockey and Tri-City Fever Arena Football games. If I didn’t have the Snowie, there would be no way to keep up with the demand.
Without Snowie, I would still be struggling and just getting by, and probably still working 3 jobs. We now have a store front, where we serve Snowie 363 days a year. Our business Mantra has become “Our job is making you smile,” Because no one can eat a Snowie, without having a big grin on their face. I can’t imagine using anything but Snowie. Now I have a dream job where I work with my wife and kids, and the most stress I have is keeping the line moving faster. Thank You Snowie!
